Anthony Albanese’s mate Nareen Young returns to ABC TV after white bread spray

PM’s close mate who slammed Scott Morrison for eating white bread makes a dramatic return to TV – blasting trolls who attacked her over bizarre spray – as she provides an insight into Anthony Albanese’s success

A close mate of Anthony Albanese who came to national attention when she blasted Scott Morrison for eating white bread has returned to the ABC to hit out at trolls who targetted her over her outlandish comments.

Professor Nareen Young slammed Mr Morrison as being out of touch for his dietary choices during a TV debate in February.

Her bizarre comments, aired on The Drum, sparked uproar – and, as she told presenter John Barron during her return to the show this week – led to a barrage of cruel trolling.

‘There are a lot of people who watch your show that think they need to tell me their views and how I am a fat transsexual,’ Professor Young said. She claimed she was a victim of ‘lies’ in media reporting.

Professor Young also gave an insight into Mr Albanese’s new prime ministership – acknowledging she has known him ‘for a long time’, as the new leader notches up an impressive 61 per cent approval rating.

She added that she didn’t want to ‘big note about our friendship or relationship’, but has previously revealed the Prime Minister was the best man at her wedding.

‘I have watched (Mr Albanese) politically for a long time, so none of (his popularity) surprises me,’ she said.

Ms Young said the Government had ‘a strategy … that people would get to know him during the period, but now around so many things he’s grasping the mantle of leadership.

‘We clearly needed it. I think people were desperate for positivity and unity and a sense of leadership and togetherness,’ she said.

Ms Young said the federal Labor Party is ‘as united as I have ever observed it to be’ but warned ‘there’s a couple of people around the former leader (Bill Shorten) who might play indulgent games’.

She added that ‘there’s no room in the Labor Party for that kind of indulgence ever again.

‘It was an absolute abomination in terms of the trust Australians gave to that (previous 2007-2013 Labor) Government and those little boys who had a little play …

‘(They) killed two Labor leaders and they should be ashamed of themselves and I just don’t think there’s any room for it any more,’ said Ms Young.

Earlier this year, Daily Mail Australia wrote an article about how Prof. Young had attacked Mr Morrison’s credibility over his choice of toast.

Mr Morrison had said he was a ‘white bread man’ – leading Prof Young to single it out as ‘really interesting.

‘Who eats white bread in this country? Anglo men,’ she said.

‘I think it shows a deep lack of understanding as to who works in this country. I think that there’s a deep intersection of race and class.’

Radio 2GB host Ben Fordham said the ABC shouldn’t have allowed the professor, who he called a ‘fruitcake’. to go to air with such an absurd statement.

‘If that isn’t the worst political take ever, it’s on the podium,’ he said.

Fordham said the segment was ‘like a comedy sketch’ and her observation was out of touch.

‘Professor Nareen Young decided this was an issue, not that the PM didn’t know the price of bread but the type of bread he eats,’ he said.

‘You may want to keep her logic in mind when you head to the supermarket this afternoon if you’re a white anglo man, don’t go buying Tip Top or Wonder White.

Additionally, she was the chief executive of the Diversity Council of Australia.
