COVID-19 NSW: Byron Bay hostel Aquarius Backpackers sent into lockdown for one week

Dozens of guests at a Byron Bay hostel are BANNED from leaving the building for a week after ‘close contact’ with a Covid-19 case

A total of 84 guests will be locked down inside a Byron Bay hostel for one week after coming into close contact with a positive Covid-19 case.

Police have cordoned off the Aquarius Backpackers accommodation in the northern NSW town as guests, staff and visitors are kept in isolation.

It’s understood those isolating inside the hostel will be tested by NSW Health and food and necessary supplies will be dropped off to those in need.

Officers and a police car were seen outside the hostel’s entrance on Wednesday night while guests inside ate dinner.

The area has been taped off with police questioning those entering and leaving the premises.

Local MP Justine Elliot say those locked down are awaiting official advice from NSW Health but it’s understood they will need to isolate for seven days.

Another MP for Ballina, Tamara Smith, said police will be monitoring the situation closely.

‘NSW Health have locked down the venue and all 84 people are in a seven-day lockdown in the premises and I’m told being supported with food, health and support,’ she said.

‘Police are monitoring compliance 24/7 over the next 7 days.

‘My thoughts are with everyone in that situation as it will be a tough time, and I will keep checking in to make sure that people are getting the support they need.’

Aquarius declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail Australia. NSW Health has also been contacted.

The northern NSW local health district confirmed there had been two new cases of the virus reported in the area on Wednesday.
