Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s World War Two veteran father dies in hospital aged 98 after battling heart condition

Chuck Schumer’s World War Two veteran father has died aged 98 after battling a heart condition.

The Senate Majority leader confirmed his father Abe Schumer passed on Wednesday evening, days after he told reporters the 98-year-old had been in the hospital for a  heart procedure. 

Schumer, 71, took to social media to memorialize his ‘amazing’ dad, sharing a photo of his father with him and his children.

‘In so many ways—he personified the greatest generation,’ he wrote. ‘He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained. An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent. We love him & will miss him.’

Schumer told reporters this week he was was close with his father, and planned spending Thanksgiving with him. Sadly, his father’s health took an unexpected turn for the worse, and Abe lost his life just before the annual event. 

The eldest child, Schumer was born on Thanksgiving day in 1950, and was one of  three children Abe shared with his wife Stella.   

Abe, who grew up in Utica, is survived by his wife Stella and his three children, Chuck, Robert and Fran.  

The Senate Majority Leader took every opportunity to praise the World War Two veteran who served in the Pacific theater and was a radar operator in planes that flew over the Himalayas, according to the senator’s website.

‘My dad, Abe, is 98 years old. He served our country proudly in the Pacific in WWII. And I’m thankful for all he’s done for our country and our family,’ Schumer recently tweeted on Veterans Day. 

On his father’s 95th birthday, just ahead of Fathers Day, Schumer shared some words about his dad in congress.

He told the story of his father returning to Brooklyn after serving in the war and taking over his father’s small exterminating business- a job he hated- in order to support his family.  

‘He gave us the idea that we could follow our dreams standing on his strong and weary shoulders,’ he said.
