Australian children’s show Bluey is a surprise ratings success on ABC Kids as it topples prime-time shows on the main channels

Australian children’s show Bluey has consistently been a favourite with audiences.

And the popular ABC Kids series performed surprisingly well in the metro ratings on Monday, drawing more viewers than half the prime-time shows on the main commercial channels, reports TV Blackbox.

The family-friendly animation outrated several evening programs, pulling in 364,000 viewers across the five capital cities.

The broadcast was the first episode of Bluey’s third season, and was the most-watched multichannel offering of the day.

It did better than 10 Peach’s Neighbours (129,000) Nine’s Love Island Australia (176,000), and Seven’s Big Brother VIP (340,000).

Bluey, arguably Australia’s most popular children’s TV show, follows the adventures of ‘a loveable, inexhaustible six-year-old Blue Heeler dog’ along with her family, which includes her mum, dad and younger sister, and her friends.

The show has even captured the hearts and minds of schoolchildren across America and is changing the way they speak.

Kids in the United States are beginning to speak with an unmistakable Australian twang after watching Bluey.

The cartoon has become wildly popular in the US after premiering on the Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney+ in September, 2019.

Last year The New York Times described the show as ‘the biggest Australian export since The Wiggles’ – the country’s most famous children’s band.

The cartoon stays true to its true-blue roots and is packed with ‘g’day’ greetings and unmistakably Aussie phrases like ‘show us your thongs, muffin!’
