Emmy Rossum says blonde pinup Angelyne was the original influencer

Emmy Rossum’s new Peacock limited series Angelyne is set to debut this month.

It has been a long dream project for the Shameless actress who tried to get it off the ground four years ago but was delayed by the pandemic and the arrival of her first child, a daughter named Samantha with director husband Sam Esmail.

But it has all been worth it as the brunette beauty feels the enigmatic celebrity deserves credit for being one of the very first influencers, she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Though no one ever really learned with certainty how the star made her money, the billboards stayed up and she became an iconic Los Angeles figure.

Rossum, who first saw the posters at age 13 and was transfixed by the woman’s confidence, felt the bombshell deserved a closer look.

‘I found, and find, her fascinating. There’s an immediacy to her story. She’s the original influencer. She was doing this before anybody. She knew the power of her image, which is why she had so much control over it,’ said Emmy.

When she first saw the posters as a teen it had a big impact on her.

‘I remember seeing a woman who was totally empowered in her body, in her sexuality, in her womanhood in a way that I certainly was not at 13 — somebody that had captured the city’s attention, seemingly magically,’ she said.

And Emmy – who has curly brunette hair – was happy to transform into Angelyne – a blonde.

‘I found it to be completely liberating to look in the mirror and not see myself at all. At first, it’s unnerving. But feeling lost gives way to this real liberation — from myself and the hang-ups that can impede a performance,’ she shared.

In a press release Emmy said she was happy to take on the role. ‘I’ve spent the better part of 4 years thinking, living, and breathing this project. I love Angelyne,’ she shared. ‘She’s as if Marilyn Monroe got into an easy bake oven with a 80s punk Barbie Doll, and a dose of new age spirituality.’

Rossum added, ‘She’s a trailblazer, a hustler, a visionary, the original influencer, a living-breathing piece of art. Here is a little taste of the show. I hope you fall in love with her magic.’

Emmy thinks Angelyne is socially relevant. ‘As a society broadening our understanding of identity, this story plays with large questions. Are we defined by the historical facts of our life? Or can we define ourselves?’ she said in the release.

‘To self-actualize, to embrace whoever we are on the inside and live whatever truth feels most accurate. When everyone’s experience of reality and truth is personal, can there ever be one true story?’

And Rossum also touched on why she left her hit series Shameless when talking to THR.

Empowered: 'I remember seeing a woman who was totally empowered in her body, in her sexuality, in her womanhood in a way that I certainly was not at 13 — somebody that had captured the city's attention, seemingly magically,' she said. Seen with Martin Freeman as Maurice Wallach

‘I certainly was never trying to make any kind of grand political statement,’ said Emmy. ‘I was only trying to do what felt right. The idea of not continuing on Shameless was not one I ever wanted to entertain. So when it all worked out, I was thrilled — thrilled my small victory was part of a much larger tide. But my story is not unique. It was just public. Wage disparity becomes even more pronounced when you factor in age, race, body size and orientation.’

The trailer for Angelyne shows Rossum wearing all pink, driving a pink Corvette, and renting billboards on famed Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles so she could post sexy images of herself.

‘Since I was a girl, I’ve known that fame is my destiny,’ Rossum as Angelyne said in the trailer. ‘Huge, gigantic fame. So, I said, I’m going to get the love of the world.’

But Angelyn has been a bit of an enigma because while she is consistent with the sexy image she projects, she is actually very guarded about her personal life.

‘Contrary to what people think, I’m actually very private,’ she said in the new clip. ‘People should respect that.’

So the series is not really a biography, but rather an idea of what she was.

‘This isn’t the true story of Angelyne,’ said series showrunner Allison Miller. ‘It’s not a straight forward biopic. It’s a story inspired by everything Angelyne represents and so it’s a magical story, a hopeful story, a story about becoming the person you were meant to be and believing in your own inner strength to manifest your dreams.’

Rossum is seen making her stunning transformation as the buxom beauty with a tiny waistline and long, slender legs.

And the brunette actress slipped on a big bleach blonde wig with bangs and curls to resemble the pinup.

In the trailer, Angelyne is seen singing and dancing on stage and modeling for photo shoots.

It has never been known how she has made her money. Some people have claimed that she was an escort or porn star, which is hinted at in the trailer a bit.

Also in the clip, she is seen admitting that fame is not always good as people want a piece of her no matter what the cost.

And the fans loved her: 'Huge, gigantic fame. So, I said, I'm going to get the love of the world,' said the star in the clip

Fans are seen surrounding her for autographs, which she obliges to.

And the star is also seen dancing in a red outfit with showgirls on stage, posed in a science fiction style posh UFO, and walking through a diner.

There are also several people seen being interviewed in the fictionalized movie that have their points of view about the star, some even saying they helped make her famous.

For the most part, they don’t seem to have kind things to say about the star, one even suggesting in voiceover that her fake breasts were bought for her.

Martin Freeman, Hamish Linklater, Michael Angarano, Molly Ephraim, Philip Ettinger, Lukas Gage, Charlie Rowe, Alex Karpovsky, and David Krumholtz round out the cast.

Say what? 'This isn't the true story of Angelyne,' said series showrunner Allison Miller. A lot of guesses were made about who she is in real life

Angelyne premieres May 19 on Peacock.

The upcoming series explores the identity of the mysterious Los Angeles icon (born Ronia Tamar Goldberg), 71, who came to fame after putting herself on billboards across the city in 1984.

The drama, executive produced by Rossum’s husband and Mr. Robot creator Esmail, is based on The Hollywood Reporter feature in 2017 by senior writer Gary Baum.

The promotional barrage got the attention of drivers, passer-byes and local media outlets, which eventually led to a number of offers for film roles, television appearances, modeling opportunities and interviews.

Her pink attire became a staple of her look, but it was her pink Corvette and large breasts that became her main trademark.

Angelyne is also a singer, who has released three studio albums and a number of singles over the last four decades.

She also ran as a candidate in the California governor recall election in 2003, and again 2021. Ultimately, Arnold Schwarzenegger won the recall two decades ago, taking over for Governor Gray Davis, while Governor Gavin Newsom was able to stave off the recall earlier this year and remain in office.
