Transgender daughter of Home and Away star Mat Stevenson takes on politicians

Grace Hyland, the transgender daughter of former Home and Away star Mat Stevenson, has lashed out at politicians making gender transition an election issue.

The activist and TikTok star said on Tuesday she sees being transgender as a medical condition and ‘hates’ the fact it has become a political talking point.

‘Being trans is something that is now being politicised into a left or right issue. I’m sorry, it’s not a left or right issue. It’s a medical issue,’ Grace told 9Honey.

Having her say: Grace Hyland, the transgender daughter of former Home and Away star Mat Stevenson, has lashed out at politicians making gender transition an election issue

‘No matter what side of the spectrum you sit on, people deserve treatment for their health,’ she added. ‘If there’s one thing I hate, it’s being politicised, because in my mind, it’s the antithesis of a political issue.’

Hyland was first diagnosed with gender dysphoria by The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Gender Service, and was prescribed testosterone blockers in her early teens.

She previously told The Sunday Project she ‘genuinely doesn’t think she would still be here’ if she had gone through male puberty.

It comes after Katherine Deves, the controversial Liberal candidate for Warringah, faced backlash for her tweets about trans women and transgender youth seeking gender affirming procedures.

Among her since-deleted tweets included a picture of a teenager who had undergone top surgery, with a caption reading: ‘They will not stand for seeing vulnerable children surgically mutilated and sterilised.

‘The lawsuits will be legion, as will be the government inquiries. Complete failure of safeguarding. Mark my words.’

Last December, Deves described surrogacy as ‘reproductive prostitution’.

‘It is egregious exploitation of women, both the woman from the egg is “harvested” and the pregnant woman who gives birth to the baby,’ she wrote.

She also compared lobbying to stop transgender athletes from competing in women’s sport to standing up against the Holocaust and transgender rights to the Nazis and the Stolen Generation.

In April 2021, Ms Deves tweeted about a trial where a Canadian father was taken to court for not supporting his teenager transitioning.

‘This will go down in history as akin to the grudge trials of the Third Reich,’ she wrote.

‘I do not like to invoke Nazism but the parallels are remarkable and deeply sinister.

‘We can only hope that when society comes to its senses, it’s redeemed by trials similar to the Nazi wife and the border guards.’

Despite the fallout to her beliefs, she maintains her stance is ‘just common sense’.

‘It’s not controversial for women and girls to want to have a female-only sports category,’ she said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has publicly supported Ms Deves despite calls to disendorse her over the hurtful comments.

‘Others might want to cancel her. Others might want to cancel other Australians for standing up for things that they believe in, but I’m not going to have a partnership with them,’ he said.

‘In terms of what Katherine Deves has said in the past, she has withdrawn those and said they were insensitive. And that was my view as well. I don’t support those earlier comments.’
