The Hulu series depicts the rise of the opioid drug Purdue Pharma’s OxyContin, and is inspired by the nonfiction novel Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, And The Drug Company That Addicted America by Beth Macy.

The weekly streaming show is a dramatised version of the epidemic, combining real-life figures with synthesized characters, showing how their lives were affected, and sometimes destroyed, by the drug.

Rosario Dawson is also set to star in the limited series, playing the role of ‘tough DEA agent’ Bridget Meyer whose sole mission is ‘to curtail the use of OxyContin’ in her struggling community.
