Zazie Beetz discusses shattering conventional Western stereotypes in The Harder They Fall

Zazie Beetz is opening up about destroying traditional Western stereotypes in her all-Black Western film The Harder They Fall.

While the film isn’t based on a true story, all of the characters are real people, including Beetz’s character, Mary Fields, a.k.a. Stagecoach Mary, the first Black female star route mail carrier in the United States.

The 30-year-old actress opened up on Tuesday night’s episode revealing how she’s wanted to star in a Western for a long time, along with how this movie breaks the Western mold in many ways.

Beetz began by stating the film is in the ‘vein of the true Western,’ adding it’s a ‘revenge story, adding she is the lover of Nat Love, who seeks vengeance for his father’s death, and she, ‘joins him on this journey.’

One of the biggest staples of Western movies is riding horses, and Beetz revealed she was familiar with that as well.

‘My family, we used to go to this farm and they had traditional livestock but also horses, and they would just throw the kids on the horses and ride them around,’ she said.

Beetz added that she wasn’t, ‘trained traditionally,’ but riding a horse is, ‘more about rhythm.’

The movie itself shatters stereotypes, as one of the few Westerns in cinematic history to feature an entirely Black cast.

Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors plays Nat Love, who embarks on a vengeful mission to kill wanted criminal Rufus Buck (Idris Elba), for killing his father when he was just a child.
