Arsenal in talks with Juventus over loan move for Brazilian Arthur Melo as Mikel Arteta tries to strengthen his midfield options

Arsenal are in talks with Juventus over a loan deal for Brazilian midfielder Arthur.

The 25-year old former Barcelona star is keen to make the move but is waiting on Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri given the deal the all clear.

Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in reinforcements after allowing Ainsley Maitland-Niles to join Roma.

Arthur Melo is set for a loan move to Arsenal having struggled for game time at Juventus

Arthur, who moved to Juventus from Barcelona in 2020 as part of a swap deal for Miralem Pjanic valued at £66million, isn’t a regular in Allegri’s team and has made just 11 appearances and four starts this season so far.

He started more regularly under Andrea Pirlo last season but has fallen behind in the pecking order and a loan move to England could be sanctioned.

The Brazilian was linked with a transfer to Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham prior to his move to Juventus.

Arthur has made 17 appearances for Brazil and was involved in the squad that won the 2019 Copa America. His last international appearance came in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in November, when he scored in a 2-0 win.

Arteta is short of midfield options at the moment with Granit Xhaka testing positive for Covid-19 this week and Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

They currently sit fourth in the Premier League table as they chase a return to the Champions League next season and are set to take on Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

But they fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup last weekend, losing 1-0 to Championship club Nottingham Forest.
