Brisbane Lions keen to talk to Buddy Franklin after report he and wife Jesinta want to head north

Brisbane Lions are keen to ‘have a chat’ to Buddy Franklin after bombshell report that superstar and model wife Jesinta want to head north to be with her family

The Brisbane Lions are prepared to ‘have a chat’ with superstar Buddy Franklin amid a bombshell report the off-contract Sydney Swans star is open to leaving the Harbour City with his wife Jesinta.

Franklin, 35, is in the final season of a nine-year, $10million contract with the Bloods, but with Jesinta reportedly keen to be closer to her family on the Gold Coast, he may seek a fresh start under Lions coach Chris Fagan.

A Lions club official on Thursday stated there has been no communication with the key forward, but if the father of two ‘wants to move to Queensland, we would have a chat’.

Earlier this year it was reported the Swans were prepared to pay the two-time premiership winner with Hawthorn $500,000 a season from 2023.

Franklin was said to be ‘insulted’ by the offer and was anticipating a deal of around $700,000 to $800,000 annually.

Swans chief executive Tom Harley is confident the club can retain Franklin, and that things (contract talks) were ‘tracking well at the moment.’

Franklin, who joined the exclusive 1000 goals club earlier this year, would be a huge acquisition at many AFL clubs despite nearing the end of his glittering career.

With Fagan’s team a genuine premiership contender, there is a real possibility the man with the best left foot in the code could win his first flag since 2013.

His possible arrival at the Gabba would bolster an already healthy forward line for Brisbane, who boast Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron among their ranks.

Jesinta recently completed a three-day course and exam, administered by the AFL Players’ Association, required to be a player’s agent.

The course educates aspiring agents on a range of topics include their roles, rules and regulations and talent identification.

Participants first apply to the AFL Players Association and complete the three-day agent course, priced at $3,300.

They then sit a three-hour entrance exam to test their knowledge.

Speaking on Channel Seven’s The Morning Show last month, the model stated ‘we’ve got options’ when host Kylie Gillies suggested there were plenty of other rival clubs that would snap up Buddy.

‘There’s always rumours and speculation swirling around Bud, and I think when he’s coming to the end of such an amazing contract, this was always going to happen,’ she said.

‘But I think they’re just that; they’re rumours and they’re speculation.’

She also appeared to take a subtle swipe at the Swans for their ‘lowball’ contract offer of $500,000, adamant her husband has ‘got great footy’ left in him despite his age.

‘I still feel like he’s got lots to give, and he still feels like he’s got great footy [left in him], and he feels so good,’ she said, adding: ‘He keeps saying, ‘I feel like I’m 21,’ which is great. And the stats really show that as well.’

In March, Franklin became just the sixth VFL/AFL player to kick 1000 career goals amid iconic scenes at the SCG after he reached the milestone in a round two match versus Geelong.
