Dominic Calvert-Lewin could MISS Everton’s opening game of the season against Chelsea after suffering an injury in training… giving Frank Lampard a major selection headache already

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could miss Everton’s Premier League opener against Chelsea after suffering an injury in training.

The 25-year-old, who missed large chunks of last season, picked up a knock during Tuesday’s session at Finch Farm.

Everton’s medical team are working to understand the extend of the injury and are assessing the England international to see if there is any chance he can play on Saturday.

Doubts over whether Calvert-Lewin can play will be a concern to Toffees manager Frank Lampard.

The club sold Richarlison to Tottenham earlier this summer in a deal worth £60million.

Everton will also be without back-up striker Salomon Rondon, who is suspended for Saturday’s game after he was sent off against Brentford at the end of last season.

Calvert-Lewin suffered an injury-plagued campaign last year following a promising start, in which he scored in each of the opening three games of the season.

The striker would only go on to make 15 starts in the league throughout the 2021-22 campaign.

He didn’t score another goal all season in the league until their 3-2 defeat to Brentford in May, before adding another in their important 3-2 victory against Crystal Palace that secured their Premier League survival.

He started and scored in their final pre-season game, a 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev, when he netted the opener with a flicked header at Goodison Park.

Speaking after the game, he told reporters: ‘Coming back to Goodison, the last time I was here it was different [the win over Crystal Palace] so it was a special feeling coming back and scoring early.

‘It’s been a good pre-season so far, I’ve been working hard, getting fit and I’m feeling strong and sharp

‘I’m just raring to go. We’ve another week’s prep for the Chelsea game, when we can fine-tune things. We all know we need to be at the top of our game.’
