Jamie Carragher questions Chelsea trying to sign another left-back

Jamie Carragher questions Chelsea’s move for Marc Cucurella just two years after the club spent £50m on Ben Chilwell… as he hints owner Todd Boehly may be starting to ‘PANIC’ after a tricky first summer at Stamford Bridge

Jamie Carragher has questioned Chelsea’s decision to target another left-back after signing Ben Chilwell for £50million only two years ago.

The Blues have been heavily linked with Brighton’s Marc Cucurella, and reports emerged on Wednesday that a deal had been completed for the full-back, although Brighton have since denied that the move has gone through yet.

Carragher has been left bemused by Chelsea going after Cucurella, given that they already have an England international in Chilwell to cover that position.

‘You bought Ben Chilwell for £50m and then you’re trying to get another left-back,’ Carragher said on The Overlap

‘You didn’t want them a month ago, you want them now.’

This summer represents the first transfer window since Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich as Chelsea owner.

The club have already brought in Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Carney Chukwuemeka in recent weeks as Boehly looks to stamp his authority at the club.

However, Chelsea have also missed out on a number of players including Raphinha and Jules Kounde, who both opted to join Barcelona instead.

Sat alongside Carragher, Gary Neville accused the American of wanting to ‘play Football Manager’, as he claimed that Boehly does not have a clear strategy in place.

Carragher agreed with Neville, and feels ‘panic’ may have set in after the club failed to land some of their main targets earlier in the window.

‘I think the way most football clubs are run now, it’s a lot more organised. It’s not sort of these panic things that used to happen in the past and people just go buy and you’d look at it.

‘I look at a couple of things Chelsea do and I’m just thinking, is it a panic because you haven’t bought someone and you’ve got to get someone?’ Carragher added.
