Lewis Hamilton urged to retire and avoid ‘going through all the pain’ of his struggles this season, by F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart… with seven-time world champion advised to hang up his racing gloves to ‘protect his legacy’

Sir Jackie Stewart has urged Lewis Hamilton to retire from Formula One, as the seven-time champion continues to struggle this season behind the new generation of drivers.

Hamilton, 37, is sixth in the drivers’ standings nine races in, which would be the worst result of his 16-season F1 career.

The Mercedes driver has not won any of his last 10 races – equalling the longest run of his career – and sits 98 points adrift of last year’s title rival Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

And three-time champion Stewart admitted he thinks the time has come for Hamilton to pursue his various other interests.

‘It’s time for him to resign,’ said Stewart, 83. ‘He’s got music, he’s got culture, he loves clothing and the rag trade would be absolutely suitable for him. I’m sure he’ll be very successful because he’s been earning a huge amount of money — rightfully so because he’s been the best of his time.’

Toto Wolff, Hamilton’s boss at Mercedes, admitted last winter that the Brit had grown ‘disillusioned’ with the sport after being denied a record eighth title in controversial fashion on the final lap of the year.

There were substantial rumours that he was set to retire when pipped to the crown by Verstappen. But Hamilton, who earns £40million a year, returned to partner new team-mate George Russell this season.

He has recorded just two podiums in the nine races in 2022, leaving 24-year-olds Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, of Ferrari, to head up the sport’s new era.

And Stewart has advised him to hang up his driving gloves while he can to protect his legacy.

‘Lewis is in that group of the Ayrton Sennas and the Alain Prosts — or even the Jackie Stewarts maybe,’ Stewart told the Convex Conversation podcast. ‘It’s a pity he wasn’t resigning at the top but I don’t think that’s going to happen now.

‘But nevertheless it’s wiser to stop than go through all the pain of not being able to do what you did before. He’s carried the sport well. I’d like to see him resigning now.’
