Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s situation at the Nou Camp but face an uphill battle to secure his services.
The Red Devils are said to be in the market for a central midfielder as new manager Erik ten Hag will look to rebuild the squad on his arrival at Old Trafford at the end of the season.
United are reportedly aware that Barcelona could be willing to part with De Jong as they look to offload players to fund their summer transfer business.

However, the Premier League side will face a challenge for the Dutchman with some at the club accepting that the deal could prove to be difficult, according to ESPN.
Ten Hag’s arrival at United was expected to give the club a boost in their pursuit of the 25-year-old given the manager’s previous experience with De Jong during their time together at Ajax.
But the Dutch boss is said to not be that great of a pull for De Jong, who would reportedly prefer to remain at the Nou Camp.

However, if he was told by the Catalan giants that he was no longer needed at the club, De Jong is believed to want to join a side with Champions League football.
United are now guaranteed to be playing European football next season but their tumultuous campaign has meant it will not be in the Champions League.
They are currently sixth in the Premier League, though West Ham could go ahead on goal difference if they win their clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
The prospect of the Europa League or Europa Conference League does not place the Red Devils in an advantageous position heading into the transfer window.

Barcelona are reportedly set to put nine players up for sale, including de Jong this summer as boss Xavi looks to rebuild his squad after a disappointing season.
Boss Xavi has been very clear that they need to bring in reinforcements to challenge Real Madrid for the LaLiga title and compete in the Champions League once again.
However, Barcelona are not prepared to sell De Jong for a fee less than €100million (£86m), according to Spanish publication SPORT.
The option to sell De Jong is said to be appealing to Barcelona as it would generate multi-million pound funds for the club and a profit on the £64m they paid for him.
However, the Spanish side are said to be targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva as part of their squad renovations and could offer the reigning Premier League champions a swap deal involving De Jong to land the Portugal international.

City are among a number of clubs to have reportedly shown interest in De Jong, with manager Pep Guardiola said to be an admirer.
The club have already sealed the signing of Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, announcing the deal earlier this week but according to reports City are expected to complete more business this summer.
Guardiola will look to fill the void left by Fernandinho’s departure at the end of the season, leaving City on the hunt for a new midfielder.
