British No 1 Cameron Norrie thought he had cracked Marin Cilic’s code, only for the Croat to rally back from a set down to reach the last-16 of the Italian Open in Rome.
Norrie responded well to adversity in the opening set and dug in to claim it 7-5.
But that is where the Briton appeared to use up his good fortune and Cilic, a former US Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, showed all his quality to turn the match around, running out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victor.
